identifying projectFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:Contact: Christine Naber Telephone Number: 707-322-8378 Email Address: president@sihealdsburg.org Web site address: www.sihealdsburg.org Soroptimist International of Healdsburg Assists Alliance Medical Center Healdsburg, CA, September 13, 2008 On Wednesday, September 10th, Jan Marsiglia, Grants Director of Alliance Medical Center, provided an update on the Alliance prenatal education program to Soroptimist International of Healdsburg. One year ago, the Healdsburg club provided a $5000 grant to Alliance to assist in funding the only no-cost, prenatal program taught in Spanish from north of Santa Rosa to the California border. Approximately 84% of Alliance’s patients are Latino, many of whom are monolingual Spanish speakers. The funds from the Healdsburg Soroptimists, along with grants from Kaiser Permanente and State Farm, were used to create a free, 6 week prenatal education program targeted at Spanish speaking mothers with 1st time pregnancies. Mothers and their partners were provided classes in prenatal care, as well as infant and child CPR and car seat safety. The families completing the program were awarded car seats without cost to them. Ninety-five families participated in the program’s first year, and 86% of participants completed the program. Those who were unable to finish did so because of early deliveries. Participants not only showed gains in knowledge of basic childcare and safety, but developed a strong support community. In addition, the prenatal program has now become largely financially self-sustaining.
